IN SIGHT OF THE LAKE Alice Munro
The story describes the behavior of Nancy, a woman suffering from presenile dementia. She tries to locate a doctor’s house, but fails. Instead, she meets a man, owner of a big garden, who teaches her the direction to the house. When she follows his advice, she finds the Lake View Home. She gets there and is confined in a hexagon room, where she is nearly suffocated.
But, it was a dream.
While I was reading the story, I was wondering how it would end: does she find the doctor’s house or not. I was disappointed to find that the story ended with a dream. A story that ends with a dream is, I have heard, a bad story. Why did the writer finish the story with a dream? She should have known better.
The good point about the story is the minute description of the symptom of dementia. The writer describes the psychology of the woman when she encounters new environments.
