空也上人がいた 山田太一

 （工事中）あれこれあって、結局、主人公は１９歳も年上の重光さんとセックスする。それまで老人はは結婚せよだの、俺の前でセックスせよだのと言ったが、この異常な戯言のお陰で二人は老人の通夜の時にセックスし、それまでのあれこれ色々あったが、うまく収斂している。話の持って行き方が巧い。

最初の家は何がどうなっているのかピントが合わなかったが、次第にあって来た。

重光も主人公も淡々とした口調で話し、主人公の心理描写が巧い。８１歳の老人にありうる実現不可能なセックス願望に納得しながら読んだ。（小生、来月８１歳）

山田氏は２０１１年に本作を書き、２０２３年８９歳で死去。７７歳の作品である。

The Adventure of Speckled Band by Arthur Conan Doyle

This is the textbook for the YWCA short story class. With the great help by the instuructor, Emily, I read the story very minutely.

I read the story in Japanese translation when i was a boy. At that time I thought the bed was in the middle of the room and the ventilator was also in the middle of the ceiling, but I learned that it was quite near the wall. I don't know how I thought wrong. 

The specled band was a misleading words. Doyle cunningly led the reader to believe that the gypsies were responsible for the crime. 

The snake turns back to the doctor and kills him. That was too good to believe.

Some of the mistakes Doyle made according to Emily:

1. Baboons are not native to India. They live in Africa.

2. A swamp adder does not exist. It was created by Doyle for the story's sake.

出世花 高田郁

 高田郁のデビュー作。「あきない世傳」に比べると、文章、展開、エピソードに斑や無理がある。人物描写も大げさすぎたり、展開も不自然なところがある。

最大の欠点は、桜花堂のお香が実はお縁の実母であったこと。最後の最後まで母娘関係を隠しておいて、読者を驚かす手法はしっくりしない。騙されたようだ。

遺体の身を清める仕事に携わるお縁坊もイメージが湧かない。別の仕事もあったろうに。

「銀二貫」高田郁（たかだかおる）

 小説創作の典型的技法が用いられている。

目標

主人公は寒天丁稚の（松吉）の目標

〇小豆を万遍なく混ぜた寒天を作ること。

〇真帆と結婚すること。

店主（和吉）と番頭（善次郎）の目標

〇天満宮に銀二貫を寄付すること。

障害

１．      銀二貫を小説の出だしに仇打を買うために使い、無くなる

２．      真帆は左の顔が火傷をし、別人になる

３．      漉し餡を何度やっても寒天にうまく混ざらない

４．      江戸の火災がたびたび起こる

収束

１．      真帆の養母が無くなり、真帆は自由の身となる。かねてから相思相愛の松吉と結婚

２．      漉し餡でなく餡を自分で作り、寒天にうまく混ぜることができる。大繁盛

３．      金が儲かり天満宮に銀二貫を寄付する

 

収束が出来すぎるぐらい巧くできており、感動した。

台詞は全部大阪弁で、商売人の味がよく出ている。

銀二貫があちこちに登場する。（一本通っている）

応募作は新人賞を獲れなかったが最終選考まで残った。高田郁の文才は大したものだ。応募作と改訂版は何処をどう直したか。

寒天製造過程を見ないで作品を仕上げた周到さに驚いた。

"The Third Man" by Graham Green

     Graham Green wrote the novella “The Third Man” before he wrote the screenplay.

The plot of the novella is quite different from that of the movie. The biggest difference lies at the last scene. In the movie, while Martins stands at the roadside waiting Anna approaching him. Coming close to him, Anna never pays any bit of attention to Matins but just walks away on and on. That makes a memorable scene. However, she behaves differntly in the novel:

   I [Major Calloway] watching him [Martins] striding off on his overgrown legs after the girl [Anna]. He caught her up and they walked side by side. I don’t think he said a word to her: it was like the end of a story except that before they turned out of my sight her hand was through his arm….

   I was quite surprised at the last scene. It was quite opposite. They walked with her hand through his arm. Why did Graham Green change the scene, I wonder.
