尾崎一雄 「擬態」

駄々をこねる聞かん坊の妻、芳枝の描写。金策に明け暮れする主人公の心理描写が巧い。
芳枝をなだめすかす主人公に同情する。
話の展開はないが、どことなく温かい夫婦愛の様なものを感ずる。

尾崎 一雄（おざき かずお、本名同じ、1899年ー1983年）は、1937年、短篇集『暢気眼鏡』で第5回芥川賞を受賞し、作家的地位を確立した。

SIN DOLOR by T. Coraghessan Boyle

This is a freak short story. The boy named Damaso does not feel pain, even if his leg is broken or his hand is burned. The doctor and his colleague try to study his case by extracting his DNA sample, but it was after his burial that the doctor meets Damaso again. Damaso’s father abuses him by putting on a freak show in which the father burns his arm or pierces his arm with a pin in the street. Damaso finally dies jumping from a three story building. I do not understand why he jumped from the building. The writer fails to show enough facts that leads his final death. A sad story. I admire the writer for making a very unique, unrealistic but persuasive story. Tom Coraghessan Boyle (born Thomas John Boyle, also known as T.C. Boyle, born on December 2, 1948) is a U.S. novelist and short story writer. Since the mid 1970s, he has published twelve novels and more than 100 short stories. He won the PEN/Faulkner award in 1988,[1] for his third novel, World's End, which recounts 300 years in upstate New York.

連城三紀彦 「恋文」

　連城の文は、吉行淳之介の文のように凝っていなくて、平易で分かりやすい。 　話の作り方が巧い。離婚届がラブレターという展開や、優の手紙文など変化があり、読者は引き込まれていく。 　しかし、内容的に腑に落ちない。なぜ将一は離婚を決意したのか。決意に至るまでの将一の態度の描写が不十分で、読者を納得させるまでに至っていない。郷子に対してどんな不満があったのか。むしろ最高の妻として将一は郷子を見ている（離婚届がラブレターという献身、江津子を何度も見舞いにいっている）。姉さん女房にしても、その方が将一には合うとも言っている。優との関係も問題はない。なのに、なぜ離婚を決意したのか。筆が先走って展開が現実味を帯びずに、著者の自己満足的な展開になっている。 　さらに、将一も江津子に騙されていたことを、指輪を返してもらって分かったのなら、すなわち、形だけの結婚だったと言うことが分かったのなら、何も離婚したままでいる理由がない。 　わがままな坊やを描いたのか 　読後感は極めて悪い。論理的に考えて非現実的な馬鹿げた話。ワーっと思い切り叫びたくなるような欲求不満が残る。この作家は現実味、論理性に欠ける。 　むしろ、結婚劇を境にして、将一と郷子の地位が逆転していた、というような展開の方が読者は納得する。 探偵小説専門誌『幻影城』でデビュー。大胆な仕掛けや叙情性溢れる文体を用いたトリッキーな作風で評価を得るが、直木賞を受賞した『恋文』以降は大衆小説、こと心理主義的な恋愛小説に主軸を移した。しかしその後も謀略サスペンスや誘拐ものなど、多彩なミステリの執筆も行っている。

吉行淳之介 「驟雨」

娼婦の女、道子を最初娼婦として付き合っていくうちに、道子を愛してしまっている自分に気がつくと言うだけの話。 なぜ芥川賞を取ったのか分からない。話の展開の面白さと言うより、主人公の心の動きを綿密に描いているからか。描き方がべたべたしていてはっきりしないもどかしさがある。 事細かい観察眼で情景と心情を描写している。言葉の力を使いこなそうとしている。 吉行 淳之介（よしゆき じゅんのすけ、1924年（大正13年）4月13日 - 1994年（平成6年）7月26日）は、日本文学の小説家。代表作に『驟雨』『砂の上の植物群』など。対談やエッセイの名手としても知られた。

BIRDSONGS by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

　　A Nigerian woman’s love affair story with a rich Nigerian business man. At the outset of the story her car happens to stop next to a car where seemingly her lover’s wife sits. While she looks at her, she remembers things she shared with the man. He morbidly pays attention to his wife and the woman at the same time although he declares he would not prevent her from going her own way. He even uses CwithaD (Cock with a Dick) sign with his wife, whose humor he originally discovers while talking with the woman. He also tries to let the woman listen in the music over her cell phone which he and his wife are listening to at the concert hall. He is such a bastard. The woman cuts her connection with him, hating him and at the same time wanting him to separate from his wife. She has inferiority complex with his wife. She feels defeated by her. 　　While she was waiting for the traffic to move, her irritation breaks up, lowers the car window, and shouts at the woman in the next car, “What is your problem? Why have you been staring at me? Do I owe you?” But she was actually helpless how to control her anger and anguish. 　　The technique of beginning at a traffic situation and ending with the same scene is worth imitating. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born in Nigeria in 1977. She is the author of the novels Purple Hibiscus (2003) and Half of a Yellow Sun (2006), and she has recently published a collection of short stories titled The Thing around Your Neck (2009). She has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction (2007) and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2008).

LA CONCHITA by T. Coraghessan Boyle

　　I was amazed at the excellent making of the story. The truck driver delivering a liver for transplant is caught in a mudslide, where he is asked by a woman to dig her husband and child. 　　The writer successfully presented the reader an extraordinary but possible incident where a man must chose one out of two crucial situations.The reader natually worries about the liver while he is digging the mudslide sacrifices. The writer knows well what the reader thinks and feels while he or she is reading his book. The reader wants to know the outcome of an incident, the outcome of an affair. The writer should play cat and mouse with the reader. 　　The power of imagination is twofold in writing an arresting story. One is the power to imagine how the reader responds to the development of the story, the other is the power to imagine detailed situation of an incident and put it into words. 　　The writer is successful in both points.

南川 潤 「魔法」

1. 小説の作り方が巧い。俵と伏原と凱子の三角関係で、俵が優位に立っているようだが、実は伏原にも十分勝算があると言う設定。 ２．俵はわざとヨットを転覆させたのかというミステリーを解くような形で話が展開している。 ３．俵、伏原、凱子の心理描写が詳しく描かれている分、読者は登場人物に感情移入しやすい。 ４．最後のページで伏原の凱子に対する気持ちがはっきりするのが分かり、結末を予測させる終わり方をしている。 ５．登場人物の名前が面白い。山崎豊子式命名だ。表に出ている俵、一歩下がって伏している伏原、勝気な凱子。 ６．魔法というタイトルが分からない。 南川 潤（みなみかわ じゅん、1913年9月2日 - 1955年9月22日）は東京府出身の小説家。風俗小説で知られた。慶應義塾大学英文科在学中、小説『掌の性』で第2回三田文学賞受賞。卒業の年に書いた『風俗十日』で第3回三田文学賞受賞。北原武夫と並ぶ三田派の新人として注目を浴びる。

THE LOST SYMBOL by Dan Brown

　Dan Brown again exhibited his vast knowledge about symbology presenting the reader series of puzzles covering from ancient Egyptian symbols to Greek letters.The tatooed man turns out to be Solomon's son near the end of the story. This is a surprise. Another amazing thing was the mathematical square. (I saw the square at the back gate of Sagrada Familia built by Gaudi.) However, the Lost Symbol is not so interesting as his other four novels. This is only a puzzle solving novel. One solution of mysterious symbol leads to another mystery, and the last solution leads the reader to one final word, "bible." Gradually accumulating expectation about the final solution that will tell the secret of life, the seceret of the world, the final goal of human being is disappointed.
