はじめの２ページほどを読んだだけで、どんどん引き込まれ、この女の正体と許嫁との結婚はどうなるのかという疑問が高じてとうとう最後まで読まされた。莫言の勝ちである。小説とはこういう風に書かなければならないというお手本である。最後に、結婚はご破算になり、二人は固く結ばれて死ぬという結末は、まあこれしかないだろう。狐に化かされていたとか、夢だったとかで終わっては台無しだから。
この女は現代社会の悪、人間の業で、それと心中するという展開だ。メタホーにした。ショックと同時に考えさせられるmetaphor小説だ。

白檀の刑 莫言
こんな面白く感動的な小説は最近読んだことがない。
心理描写がすごい。特に銭知事の最後の場面の心理が手に取るようにわかる。孫丙の周りで義猫や猫集団が猫腔を演ずるのを止めるか続けさせるかの葛藤、ドイツ兵への憎しみと袁世凱から認められたい出世欲との葛藤の描写。
趙甲の白檀の刑を完遂しようという意気込み、孫眉娘が銭知事を慕う有様、孫丙が岳飛になり、ドイツ鉄道を阻止する意気込み、どれも充分堪能できる描写力。 白檀の刑の執行過程の微に入り際にいる描写、１８０回かかって肉をそいでいく刑の方法の凄さ。
最後の場面の急展開。「芝居は……幕じゃ……」の素晴らしいエンディング。 語り手を次々に変える手法（ある時は孫丙、ある時は銭丁、ある時は眉娘、ある時は小甲が語る）。また、時間的に遡及する手法。 設定が良い。袁世凱や西大后などを登場させ歴史上の出来事のように設定している。また登場人物が親戚同士である。孫丙は眉娘の父親、銭丁の愛人が眉娘、眉娘の夫が小甲。小甲の父が趙甲。趙甲は眉娘の舅ということになる。その人間関係の複雑な関係が面白さを出している。
訳者によれば、この小説は「徹頭徹尾莫言の想像力の産物」だそうだ。人間の想像力は無限ではないか。 見事な出来栄えだ。

I don’t understand the theme of this story.
The plot is simple. A four-year-old girl gets works of origami made by customers, one after another, at a café while her mother is talking with her friend. The first origami is a boat, which soon comes apart while she is carrying it to her mother. The next one is a plane, which is followed by a doll, a hen, a clown, a coffee cup with a saucer, a museum, and a boat with Potemkin and Catherine the Great sailing between the banks where people are cheering, and a kangaroo and the joey, and Thinker. Finally when she is called by her mother and they are just leaving the café, when she is given a polyhedron. The writer describes the customers’ occupation and appearances, and discuss how they come to make origami elaborately, I say, too elaborately.
Every origami is destroyed unintentionally by the girl. Does the story hint the destruction of the beautiful globe? Human beings are continuously destroying without paying any attention to God’s work.

Everything is revealed at the end of the story. The Signorino was not seducing her nor did he like her. Actually the woman he loved was not the singer, but the 16-year-old singer’s servant. That’s why ‘Toinette persistently asked Madam whether she wanted to drink champagne. Actually, she wanted to go out to meet the man.
The humor lies in the end when she breaks her determination to give up eating pastry and drinking champagne. The ending goes: “Then she ordered her breakfast—and a quart of champagne.

「トカトントン」 太宰治
最後の「拝診」の文面が分かりにくいが、これは話し手の言うように「無学無思想の男」が書いたものであるから、文面通りに受け取ってはいけない。
文面通りに受け取ると、「周知が認めるように、君は最後の土壇場で醜態を晒すのを避けている。避けずに勇気をもって臨め。魂を殺しえぬ人間を懼れずに、身と魂を滅ぼし得るキリストをおそれよ」と言っている。結局、神を畏れ、神を信ずればトカトントンは消えると言っている。しかし、神を信ずればトカトントンが消えるとも思われない。だからこの文面はまともにとってはいけない。
では何を意味するか。答えは「私」の手紙の最後にある。「自殺を考へ、トカトントン」とある。太宰は翌年自殺するが、「トカトントン」を書いていた時に自殺をすべきかどうか、自殺する勇気がない不甲斐なさを嘆いていたと思われる。だから、「拝復」を書いた太宰自身は「身を殺して」とか「身を滅ぼす」などの聖書の言葉を引用して、「身を滅ぼせば」トカトントンが消えると暗示し、自殺できないでいる自分自身の勇気のなさを自虐的に自嘲している。「死ねばトカトントンは治るのに、勇気がない」と言っているのだ。「醜態」とは自殺をした後の自分の哀れな姿だ。
「皮膚と心」 太宰治
女性の肌に吹き出物が出て、それがますますひどくなるが、医者へ行って治る話。
短編の中に「ボヴァリー夫人」のエンマが登場し、もしエンマの肌に吹き出物ができていたらロドルフの誘惑を断っただろうと書いている。これは何を意味するか。写実主義とロマン主義の正面衝突を描いている。ロマンな心を持っている主人公が現実（吹き出物）を見てもだえるのである。
タイトルの「皮膚」は写実・現実主義の吹き出物を意味し、「心」はロマン主義を意味している。

1. A very shocking ending.
2. A lot of misleading foreshadows: “fresh warmth, blossoming” at the beginning, followed by “square dances, the teen club.” No serious scene, talkative Mr. Summers.
3. What is the theme of the story? Does it tell us that human beings are selfish? Once the black spotted paper falls onto others, one is relieved and can be cruel to them. Or people are faithfully practicing the traditional rituals even the significance has long faded?
4. The atmosphere of drawing lotteries is friendly and casual, and not serious or solemn at all. Then why don’t they open their papers after they returned to their original position in the crowd?
