The story is humorous but in the end it reveals the loneliness of a human being. The protagonist Teresa, a giant muscular vigour, is a lonely girl. So she creates an imaginary friends and tries to communicate with them by writing letters and receiving replies. Since she cannot write letters she asks a man to write letters for her. The man finally understands her situation:
"I understood at last. And I felt so sick, so miserable, so ashamed, somehow. Alongside of me, not three yards away, lived a human creature who had nobody in the world to treat her kindly, affectionately, and this human being had invented a friend for herself!"
At the end of the story Gorky explains what he wanted to say in it. The ending part should be ommitted. He should believe in the reading ability of the readers.
