Marigolds by Eugeia Collier published in 1969

This is a very good short story. It depicts the transition of a girl (Lizabeth) from childhood to adulthood. A child is innocence. He or she hurts others without thinking about their feelings. Miss Lottie, who was called a ‘witch’ by her neighboring children, grows marigolds. Growing them was the only retreat from her dusty, harsh, ramshackle life. But, since Lizabeth destroys all the marigolds, she quits growing them. Lizabeth recognizes what she has done to Miss Lottie only after the destruction and observation of Lottie’s sad face. This is her moment of transition.

The story ends with this:

For one does not have to be ignorant and poor to find that his life is as barren as the dusty yards of our town. And I too have planted marigolds. 

Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger published in 1951

This is an interesting, amusing, and funny story. It is a collection of the episodes that describe the life of the protagonist, Holden Cadifield. He is 17 or 18 years old.

Each episode is written in a casual and carefree way with a lot of colloquial expressions and slangs. His episodes are about his friends, his teachers, his brother and sister. What makes the story interesting is that he tells his true feeling about the things he does or he says.

Here are some of the impressive expressions:

He took my mind off from the other stuff.

I sat down in the vomity-looking chair.

Which always kills me.

I’m always saying, “Glad to’ve met you” to somebody I’m not at all glad.

If you want to stay alive, you have to say that stuff, though.

What I did, I finally put my suitcase under my bed, instead of the rack, so that old Slagle wouldn’t get a goddam inferiority complex about it.

“Yeah. Wanna talka Sally. Very important. Put her on.

Excuse the appearance of the place.

I’m a moderate smoker.

When something pervert like that happens, I start sweating like a bastard.

 

 

滝沢馬琴 杉本苑子

杉本苑子の大作二冊目『滝沢馬琴』を読了。『弧愁の岸』に劣らぬ描写と史料蒐集に感嘆す。

馬琴が頼みとしていた、まだ目が見えていた片目が失明する処から話が始まり、８２歳で没するまでが事細かに描かれている。２７年間掛けて書き上げた『南総里見八犬伝』も、我々現代人が手に取れば、艱難辛苦をなめなめ書き上げたと思えないのだが、実のところ、相当な苦労の中で書き上げたものだ。律儀な長男宗伯を若くして亡くし、妻のお百は自分の都合だけを考え、著作には全く理解を示さない、長女お幸の夫、清右衛門も死去するし、妹お秀の子和助とお加乃の心中、跡取りの孫の太郎は病弱で跡取りの自覚が足りない。板元や同業者の足の引っ張り合い、改作、偽作など、一日たりとも平安に著作した日はないほどだ。なかでも、興味深く読んだのは完全に失明してから、代筆を四人ぐらい使ったが、どれもこれも代筆が馬琴の思うようにできない。最後に嫁のお路が「わたしが遣ります」と申し出るに至り、無学のお路に文字を教え、漢字を教え、一字一字著述していく姿は何としてでも『八犬伝』を書き上げるという意欲が現れていた。

完成した暁の馬琴とお路の喜びは例えようもなかっただろう。

お路も代筆をしている間に、文を書くことを覚え、最後のページで達意の候文を書いている。これも感心した。

それにしても、杉本苑子はどのようにして『滝沢馬琴』を書いたのだろうか。馬琴は日記をつけており、全五冊の日記集がある。三巻まで見たが、三巻目までは宗伯が生きていた。四巻と五巻に失明以降のことが書かれているのであろう。馬琴は日記のほかに全七巻ほどある『馬琴書簡集』なるものを遺した。杉本氏は紐解いた解いたのであろう。

日経新聞の小説で朝井まかて著『秘密の花壇』という馬琴を扱った小説を読んだが、お路に対する態度が、杉本氏の作品の方が寛容さが表れていた。日記と書簡と朝井作と杉本作を読み比べると面白いだろう。

Bartleby, The Scrivener by Herman Melville

   This is one of the most difficult story I have ever read. I was not able to figure out what Melville wants to say. First, I thouoght Bartleby was a sort of God, but then I regarded him as Fate, because you cannot change your Fate however way you try. The narrator trys to change his manner but failed in his attempts and gets rid of himself and leaves the office. Finally, the narrator reveals his job before he came to the narrator's office. He was working for a Dead Letter Office. I then thought Bartleby was death itself. From the first appearance he was like a dead man and at the end of the story, the narrator depicts him as a sort of dead man or body.

He had no hope, nor aim in life, faced the dead wall and died of hunger. What a pity!  

I resent the way the narrator handled Bartleby. He was so generous. He should have forced Bartleby to go out of his office even with the help of the police. 

Anyway, this is a difficult story. Various interpretations are possible. I checked the Internet, and found not a few questions were asked about "Bartleby," a mysterious existence.

「ラジオビジネス英語」 ”NHK Radio Business English”

 ラジオビジネス英語

「NHKラジオビジネス英語」のThe Writer's Workshopで、最優秀賞を受賞した。これまでに最優秀賞は、2011，2014，2018年と、三回受賞していたが、久しぶりの受賞である。この一年間ぐらいは、佳作さえ入賞できず、毎回、「ああ、まただめだ」としょげていた。今回も、せめて佳作をと思って、テキストを捲ると、な、なんと、最優秀賞に名前が載っていた。素晴らしい。没、また没、またまた没の連続で、テキスト代550円が、もったいないと思う毎月であった。

この三カ月ぐらいは、日本語の課題文に引きずられない英文を心掛けていた。また、難しい、馴染みのない表現は避け、英語らしい英文を描くように心がけていた。訳し落としや、日本語の意味の取り違えなどに細心の注意を払ってきた。その成果が出たのかも知れない。

今後とも最優秀賞を獲るべく、日英の語学力を磨いていきたい。

弧愁の岸 杉本苑子

 宝暦治水を扱った大作を読み終えた。

同じ題材を扱った「暴れ川」（原稿用紙６０枚）を私は数年前に著し、岐阜県文芸祭賞を受賞しているから、木曽、長良、伊尾の三河川の治水については詳しく知っているつもりであった。しかし、この大作を読み、驚いた。

歴史的事実を徹底的に調べ上げたことが伺える。特に平田靱負が３０万両を如何に工面したか、大阪商人との駆け引き、薩摩藩の庶民に課した重税などが詳細が描かれている。恐らく、著者は薩摩藩史や岐阜県史、三重県史を紐解いたのであろう。

江戸幕府の仕打ちに、どう対応するか激しい論議も、くどいほど描かれている。幕府との戦いに完敗する悔しさと、美濃の農民を助ける奉仕の精神との葛藤が、藩士同士の論戦で描かれている。

また、村人や庄屋や郡役人の金儲け主義の汚さも抉り出している。

工事の困難さも詳しい。水の恐ろしさ、村人から町方工事人への切り替えをどう進めるか、靱負の遣り口も詳しい。

多くの犠牲者を出し、責任を取って一人、切腹する平田靱負が哀れである。

薩摩藩士の墓が桑名の海蔵寺（私の父の学友が住職であった。また私の妻の実家の菩提寺でもある）にあるが、大牧村本小屋から船で遺体を桑名にまず運んで、経をあげたのであろう。その後、伏見の菩提寺・大黒寺に埋葬されたのだろう。

どのように杉本苑子が書き上げたか知りたい。近いうちに治水神社に行き、霊に合掌したい。

「弧愁の岸」というタイトルの「弧愁」は「一人物思いに沈む」と言う意味。一人は靱負のことであろう。「岸」は遺体が揖斐川を下る時、左手に油島千間堤を見るが、その岸であろう。

小坂部姫 岡本綺堂

岡本綺堂の想像力の逞しさに脱帽。出だしの兼好法師を訪う小坂部姫の遣取りといい、高師直の娘と兼好が言葉を交わす場面といい実に面白い。暗黒の世界の使者の男の謎が読者を引き込んで行く。謎の男の妖術が次つぎと戦乱の世を作出し、応仁の乱の混乱も謎の男が引起こしたかのように話は展開する。歴史的事実を後から作者は巧く利用している。秀吉が二代と続かないのも小坂部姫の呪いとして使っている。最後の場面で秀吉と姫の遣取りも面白い。徳川家康が姫路城天守閣を粗末にするな、の教えに従ったため２６０年の安寧が続いた下りも妙に納得させるようなところがある。純真な小坂部姫が悪の大権現になる点も面白い。エンタメ度９０点。
