MOTHERLODE by Thomas McGuane

David, an ordinary preg-tester, is involved in a drug-related crime. He had a chance to avoid it, but his desire to get money prevented him from doing so. After he carried the stuff, he returns to Ray and Morsel but finds them dead. And [ALERT ENDING DISCLOSURE] David was shot to death when he [bent to insert the key] and [the lid rose to reveal the contents of the trunk. The story is filled with so many filthy slangs that non-native speakers of English like me find it difficult to read it. First I did not understand the last sentence: David didn’t feel a thing. The ending of this story is shocking. Another story that shocks you in the end is "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” written by Ambrose Bierce.
