白壁の樹の下で 青山文平

最初の道場破りの場面は面白いが、その後の展開がのろくて、退屈。全然のめり込んでいかない。しかし、登の恋人が殺されてから、急にのめり込み、筋を追っていくようになった。
特異な点
〇一つの文章ごとに、改行しているが、改行し過ぎではないか。分量を増やすためか。
〇刀を取り返すために人を殺めるだろうか。
〇登の剣道仲間が次々殺されることによって、読者をひきつけている。
〇剣術の技の描写が巧みだが、著者はどのようにして、技を調べたのか

西の人気男　「シング戯曲全集」

芥川龍之介が「鼠小僧次郎吉」を書いたが、彼はこの話を「西の人気男」を読んで着想を得て書いたそうだ。読むとなるほどと思った。

俺は父親を殺したと威張る男が村人から格好いい男ともてはやされ、若い女や婚約中の女性も彼をほめそやすが、殺したはずの父親が現れて、法螺であることがばれ、女や村人からさんざんな目に合う。

芥川の鼠小僧次郎吉も「俺はかの大盗賊だ」と法螺を言い放題で、宿の亭主や小僧たちは偽次郎吉をもてはやすが、その偽男の話をしていた男こそが本物の次郎吉であったのだ。

「シングの戯曲」からヒントを得て、時代と場所をすっかり変えて、エンタメとしてはよくできた話に仕立て直した芥川に敬意を表したい。

太陽系最後の日 アーサー・クラーク

「太陽系最後の日」の著者は、映画「２００１年宇宙の旅」2001 Space Odysseyの原作者、Arthur C. Clarkeの作品で、原題はRescue Party(救助隊）。１９４６年の短篇。
作品の発想が奇想天外。あと数時間で太陽が爆発して地球が破壊されるというときに、地球人を救おうとAlveronが率いる宇宙船が地球に向かうが、地球に到着しても地球人を発見できない。あきらめて地球を脱出するときに何千というロケットが地球から宇宙空間に飛び立っているのを発見する。地球人は知性が劣ると思っていたが、そうではなかった。エンディングでは、after all, we only outnumber them [earth peopl] about a thousand million to one."(我々は地球人より１０億倍の数がある）と冗談を言っていたが、２０年後には笑い事ではなくなる。
クラークは小説の舞台を地球爆発寸前の場にした。そこで宇宙人が地球人を救出するという、とんでもない発想で、小説を書いたが、そのひらめきがすごい。エンディングもいい。真似ができるものではない。
   Averon and his race, highly advanced space creatures in the universe, try to rescue people on the earth, whom they think primitive. However, at the end of the story they are surprised to see thousands of rockets flying into space, escaping the explosion of the earth. Averon is surprised at the highly advanced technology accomplished by the people on the earth.                                                                                                                                         

The Necklace by Guy De Maupassant

Questions on "The Necklace"

1. It is unnatural for Loisel to go to Forestier to borrow the jewel because Loisel "would so  have liked to please, to be envied, to be charming, to be sought after." In other words, she disliked to be pitied, to be sympathizied, to disgrace herself, to be looked down upon. She is the least women who would borrow a jewel from her aquaintance. That would be a shame for her. Borrwoing the jewel from Forestier is unlike Loisel.

2. Why didn't Forestier say, "But this is paste. Is it all right with you?" Maupassant intentionally hide the truth, for the sake of the last surprise. This is a dirty trick. 

3. When Loisel returned the neckless to Forestier, she said, "You should have returned it sooner, I might have  needed it." But Loisel had written to her that she was having the necklace mended. Therefore, Forestier's words sound too cold. Moreover, she had a lot of wonderful  jewels besides the necklace. She could have worn any one of them.

4. When Loisel happened to meet Forestier after ten years' interval, she 'accuses' her by saying, "... and that because of you!" But Forestier is not responsible for the hard work she underwent. The words "becasue of you!" is too harsh and pointless.

暗殺剣虎の眼 藤沢周平

達之助は、父を闇討ちした男が大四郎だと思い込んで大四郎に挑むが、（読者は大四郎が父の仇ではないことは、作家の引っ掛けだと分かる）、実は仇は達之助の妹が嫁いだ周助という男であった。

このような読者を馬鹿にした話はない。周助が仇というのは偶然過ぎて突飛すぎる。こんなことならだれでも書ける話だ。Ａという男を犯人臭く描いておいて、最後の最後にまったく。新しいＢを登場させて、Ｂが犯人だという。読者を馬鹿にしているが、選者の杉本章子と宇江佐真理はべた褒めしている。選者もおかしい。

The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne

   This is  an allegory of human folly. It  suggests man should not pursue perfectness. 
   Aylmer, a proud scientist, tries to remove his wife's birthmark on  her cheek. The operation is  perfect and it completely disappears to his ecstasy, but he loses his wife's life in return for the success. To try to attain perfectness is, in Hawthones' view, blasphemous.
   Hawthorne's way of writig is too elaborate, too minute, too philosophical, and too wordy. The description of Aylmer's scentific experiments is imaginary and does not sound real. He uses 1000 unnecessary words to say one thing which can be expressed in five words. Enough is enough.
One Japanese old saying tells the key point of the story: Tsuno wo tamete ushi wo korosu, meaning: Trying to make the the bull's horns straight , you kill the bull.

   

Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier

　I saw Hitchcock’s movie under the same title decades ago. It was thrilling, exciting, and fearful. The ending where the leader of the pirate was revealed was astonishingly surprising. Therefore, I was not surprised to read the ending part this time.

　I admire the writer’s excellent and minute description of the scenes and the protagonist, Mary Yellan’s psychology. Joss’s rough and forceful way of talking is well written.

　I had expected to read the scene of attacking a ship more precisely, but it was, to my disappointment, too brief. Also, the writer should have written how Joss obeyed the vicar’s direction vividly.
   The first half of the story is very intriguing, but the ending chapter where Mary and Jem talk is too long and too tiring.
