TO BUILD A FIRE Jack London

　　No other story is so moving. Immediately after I read a few pages, I found myself identified with the protagonist.
　　His battle against the freezing cold, more than fifty degrees below zero, is lost when he gives up and sits on the icy ground, his body frozen and numbed, knowing that he will soon die.
　　The climax of the story is when the thawed snow on the branches of the tree falls on his cherished fire. He uses his heels of his hands to light the last matches and then the light fades away because he scatters it with his frozen fingers against his will.
　　 Each scene that is getting worse and worse is so well described that I felt as if I were watching a movie. Jack London is a master of story telling.
　　What moves the reader most is the story that deals with impending death. In the last part of the story, I was asking, “Can he survive? Can he survive?”
     P.S.
     Jack London may have written this book to warn human beings who are foolish enough to be destroying nature. If it were not for fire, the only method that distinguishes man and animals, what would happen to them?

　平成３年 　特に心理描写や情景描写が上手いわけでもなく、淡々とした語り口で話が展開する。癌を患っている妻に“隠れて”女を買い、自己嫌悪に陥い、最後の部分で全てが収斂される。 　「タオルを受け取り洗面所で水道の蛇口をひねると、ふいに涙があふれてきた。自分に対する憤りと、見えない何者かへのどうしようもない怒りがこみ上げて」の感情の吐露で、読者は一気に「私」に感情移入する。 　人間の生きるさみしさ、切なさ、温かさをうまく切り取った。

宵待草夜情 連城三紀彦

昭和５６年 　鈴子が照代を“殺した”あたりから、話が急展開し、読んでいて息苦しくなった。さすが吉川英治文学新人賞と直木賞を取っただけの作家だ。鈴子と古宮の心理を巧みに描き、血と赤い花を色盲というトリックを伏線にして、ぐんぐん読者を引っ張っていき、最後に謎を解き明かすという恋愛推理小説。 　情景描写も巧みで、文章一つ一つがよく練られている。作者独自の描き方をしていて、どこにも紋切り型の文句はない。 何気ない二人の出会いが、心中かと思わせるほどの迫力で迫ってくる。恐ろしい作品だ。 　文字にこのような力があるとは。この力を最大限効果的に活用しなければ作家とは言えない。

昭和49年　現代小説新人賞

　頂という名前の幕下が、ゴッチャン（八百長）相撲を仕掛けるが、２勝５敗の散々の成績で相撲界から足を洗う。 　ゴッチャンの資金稼ぎに年増の色狂い女（薄気味悪い半開きの目、巨大ロールパンの２段腹が餅のように波打つ、でかい口、豚）と寝る。一回２万５千円で１７万５千円稼ぐが、対戦相手６人に一人２万円でゴッチャン相撲を持ちかけるが、おっとどっこい、思うようにはことは運ばない。７人目の病身の相手にも負けてしまう。
　７人の取り組み相手との交渉の仕方、取り組み、その後の心の動きが手に取るように描かれている。描写力が素晴らしい。長い文がなく、短い文を畳み掛けるようにして連ねている。
　幕下人生の負け組がさらに負けていく姿を、読者に八百長がうまくいくかどうかという一点でつってつって最後まで引きずり込んでいく手腕はさすが新人賞を取っただけあると思う。ゴッチャンがうまくいって１０両になるという結末よりも、最悪の事態になる方が、読者の心を（哀しくも）打つ。

影向（ようごう） 上田三四二

　老人が電車の中で観察しているスカーフの女は、幸せにすることができなかった十志子を思い出させて、回想にふけっていると、女の隣の席が空き、そこに座ると女の肌が自分の身体に接触し「恵み」の世界に入っていく。電車から降りて、遠ざかって行く電車の中にはスカーフの女がいなかった。
　老人の心理状態と、老人が見ている現実世界を文字に写し取る描写力は舌を巻く。映画を見ていてもあのようにぞくぞくするほどの感覚は無いだろう。 スカーフの女は観音菩薩か、色々伏線がある。タイトルの影向（ようごう）、袖無のブラウス（弥勒菩薩）、藍の渦巻き（天女が紫雲を舞う）、金の鎖（仏の首の細い数珠）、崖っぷちに身を置く老人（死期）、霊園の宣伝、西方に向かう電車（天竺）、奈落の階段等。

めずらしい人 川端康成

女房と離婚し、世話女房の役をしていた息子が結婚して家を出てから、父は「めずらしい人」に会った話を娘に聞かせる。余りにもめずらしい人に会う回数が多いので、娘っはあるとき父の後をつけていくと父があっていた相手は自分の母であった。その後、母に合うためにまた後をつけていくのだが、父が話しかけた人は怪訝な顔をする。 自分の身の回りをしていてくれた者が消えて、心の安定を欠くようになった老人が、安定を求めて、めずらしい人に会ったという幻想の世界に入り込む。 妄想が始まった老人の悲哀を描いた。 　始めの方のめずらしい人に会ったのは本当の事なのか、または全部老人の妄想なのかをえさせる短編である。

The Country Husband by John Cheever

　　This short story depicts Francis’s disturbed mind well. Since he met Ann Murchison, his mind is always occupied with the girl, day and night. His dream and subconscious raises much havoc, such as: rude words toward Mrs. Wrightson ; his severe criticism about Clayton; the quarrel with his wife; and the final consultation with a psychiatrist.
　　 Too many incidents happen in the story to digest: the plane emergency landing, the noisy and quarrelsome children of his, falling in love with Ann, quarrel with his wife, lust desire over Ann, a surprise to know Clyaton’s fiancé, and the consultation.
　　  I would rather prefer a story in which a merer incident develops until the reader experience some kind of revelation or the twist, however, “The Country Husband” does not stick to an incident. It just lays out unique incidents in chronological order. I did not get any deep impression or pleasure out of the story.
　　 I don’t know why Cheever added the epilogue. Without it, would the story stop too abruptly? Without it, the story would give a strong impression on the part of the reader. Probably Cheever wanted to softland the story as the outset plane landed.

Some excellent expressions:
1. the girl entered his mind, moving with perfect freedom through its shut doors and filling chamber after chamber with her light, her perfume, and the music of her voice.
2. The sky shone like enamel. Even the smell of ink from his morning paper honed his appetite for life, and the world that was spread out around him was plainly a paradise.
3. How happy this clandestine purchase made him, how stuffy and comical the jeweler’s clerks seemed, how sweet the woman who passed at his back smelled!
4. he laughed uproariously at dull jokes. . . The bracelet was in his pocket.
5. Francis was tired from the day’s work and tired with longing.
6. his arms spread over the steering wheel and his head buried in them for love.
7. the abyss between his fantasy and the practical world opened so wide that he felt it affect the muscles of his heart.
