Alice Walker “Nineteen Fifty Five”
This is a story about Grace Mae Still, a black song writer, and Traynor, a singer. When he was 16, Traynor visits her and buys all her songs and sings them. Even if he does not know the true meaning of the songs, he sings so well that he becomes a world famous singer. He presents a Caddilac, a house and many other expensive things to Grace, but she does not need them. Traynor pursues material happiness. In the end , the singer dies. “Some said fat, some said heart, some said alcohol, some said drugs.”
Alice Walker uses Elvis Presley’s life in the background of the story. Apparently Traynor is Presley. While I was reading the story, Elvis’s image interrupted my reading. Using a character who resembles a real person in a story can be a double-edged sword.
